Let’s Talk About Color

The standards of beauty are changing rapidly in America. Whether you’re fair-skinned or dark-skinned or one of many shades between this spectrum, your skin color is beautiful. Makeup companies are aware of this beauty revolution and are now featuring more women of color in their advertisements. A few years ago, Fenty Beauty made a bold move by authentically showing women of color in their ads and now other brands, like Sephora, are jumping on the bandwagon. Sephora recently launched the “Color Up Close” campaign, and their TV commercial features a poetic voiceover about skin color while showcasing several women of color.

Now, it’s good that more companies are appreciating women of color, but why has it taken so long for them to feature these women in their ads. Who knows? But ever since Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty makeup line became widely successful for its wide range of shades, other makeup brands are following suit. It’s sad that these companies arrived late to the beauty party but at least they came.
