Did you know that that inexpensive, trendy outfit or accessory that you have in your closet may be contributing to climate change? According to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), “the textile industry contributes around ten percent of global greenhouse gas emissions—it uses more energy than the aviation and shipping industry combined.” Now, that’s a shocking fact, but we can help to combat the effects of fast fashion on the climate by making some small changes in our everyday lives.
There are three things that we can all do. First, upcycle old clothes instead of just throwing them in the trash. Second, try to wear more sustainable clothing that’s made with eco-friendly fabrics. Third, minimize or better yet avoid wearing fast fashion (i.e., inexpensive clothing produced rapidly by mass-market retailers in response to the latest trends”).
Fashionistas, you can still look fresh and on trend day in and day out, but just keep Mother Nature’s well-being in mind. Just say to yourself, what would Mother Nature say about this look?
After you’ve upcycled your worn-out clothes, you’ll need some new pieces to add to your wardrobe. Here’s a list of some sustainable fashion designers/retailers/etailers that you can check out for the latest looks that won’t negatively affect the Earth.
